We grind stumps down 6–8 inches below the surface so you can replant grass, put in a garden, or just forget it was there. Been doing it around Saint Joseph and Kansas City since 2010. We grind it, clean up the chips, and leave your yard ready to use.
Left with a stump after a tree removal? We grind it down below ground level so it's not sitting there tripping people or blocking your mower. We've ground stumps all over Saint Joseph and Kansas City—everything from small dogwood stumps in flower beds to three-foot-wide oak stumps in the middle of yards. Last fall we ground out six stumps in a backyard in Liberty where someone was putting in a new patio. Took about three hours total, ground them all down eight inches below surface, and hauled off the chips. Owner laid pavers right over where the stumps used to be. Stump grinding's pretty straightforward—we bring in the grinder, turn the stump into chips, and you get your yard back. Most jobs take an hour or less depending on size.
We grind your stump 6–8 inches below the surface—deep enough to plant grass seed or put topsoil over it. Works for stumps from 6 inches to 3 feet wide. We grind the main stump and the surface roots, turn it all into chips, and either haul them off or leave them depending on what you want. Takes 30 minutes to an hour for most residential stumps.
Need a stump ground deeper for a patio, driveway, or foundation work? We can grind down 12–18 inches if that's what your project needs. Common when people are putting in hardscaping or building something over where a tree used to be. Takes longer and costs a bit more, but you get the depth you need for construction.
Got a row of stumps from an old hedge or several from past removals? We grind them all in one visit. More efficient than scheduling separate trips, and it costs less per stump when you do them together. We've ground out entire fence lines and cleared stumps from backyards getting ready for new landscaping all over the Saint Joseph area.

Small stumps (under 12 inches) usually run $75–$150. Medium stumps (12–24 inches) cost $150–$300. Bigger stumps over 24 inches can be $300–$500 depending on diameter and root system. Multiple stumps cost less per stump. Call and we'll come look and give you an exact price.
We grind 6–8 inches below ground level as standard. That's deep enough to plant grass or put a garden bed over it. If you need it deeper for a patio, driveway, or construction, we can grind 12–18 inches down. Just tell us what you're planning and we'll grind to the right depth.
We'll haul them off if you want them gone, or spread them in your flower beds if you want mulch. Some people leave them in the hole to decompose and fill it with topsoil later. It's your call—we'll do whatever makes sense for your yard.
Yeah, we grind stumps close to structures all the time. The grinder's about 3 feet wide, so as long as we can get it there, we can grind it. If it's right against a fence or foundation, we grind as close as we can without hitting anything. Might leave a bit of stump on the side we can't reach, but we get the main part.
Most residential stumps take 30 minutes to an hour. Small stumps under a foot wide might take 20 minutes. Really big stumps over 3 feet can take a couple hours. If you've got multiple stumps, we knock them out one after another in the same visit.
The grinder's heavy, so it'll leave some tracks if the ground's soft. We try to minimize that by using plywood under the wheels when the yard's wet. The actual grinding area gets torn up, but once we fill it with topsoil and seed, it grows back. Most lawns look normal within a few weeks.
